Though they were working as litigators in Washington, DC, when they got engaged, Kelly Rose (30) and Michael Durbin (33) wanted to have a wedding on the West Coast, where Kelly grew up. “We knew we wanted to have our wedding in Orange County, California,” Kelly says. “Finding a venue remotely can be tough. My parents are members at Balboa Yacht Club, and they suggested it. Since Michael and I had seen it, it was easy to say yes.” Even though they had a waterfront ceremony and reception, Kelly and Michael opted out of a nautical theme, choosing a more classic palette of white, black and gold with touches of sequins. After a sunny outdoor ceremony overlooking the marina, the couple and their 160 guests went inside to dine at tables topped with sequined linens and decorated with vases of crisp white tulips. A chandelier that hung from the white fabric-draped rafters was covered with dense white roses and hydrangeas. Throughout the night, guests snapped photos at their leisure—including some using selfie sticks the couple provided in their welcome bags. A specially equipped booth printed copies of the pictures for the newlyweds and the guests. The idea was a hit, and sharing on social media was contagious. “It was really fun to see so many pictures on Instagram,” Kelly says. “It even motivated my Dad to sign up.”
